Ricardo Cyncynates

 

Violinist Ricardo Cyncynates has performed extensively as a soloist, recitalist, and chamber musician throughout the United States, Europe, and South America. He is Assistant Concertmaster of the National Symphony Orchestra, a position to which he was appointed by Mstislav Rostropovich following his tenure with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra.

As a soloist with the National Symphony Orchestra, Cyncynates has been featured in concertos by Mozart and Vivaldi, as well as in Sarasate’s Carmen Fantasy, Saint-Saëns’s Havanaise and Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso, and Sibelius’s Six Humoresques. He was also featured with the National Symphony Orchestra under Music Director Leonard Slatkin in Paganini’s Caprice No. 24 for solo violin as part of the League of American Orchestras’ National Conference Concert.

Cyncynates has appeared as soloist with numerous orchestras in the Washington, D.C. area, performing a wide-ranging repertoire that includes works by Bach, Brahms, Busoni, Dvořák, Mendelssohn, Mozart, Paganini, Saint-Saëns, and Sibelius, as well as Bernstein’s Serenade after Plato’s Symposium.

An active chamber musician, Cyncynates has performed at many of Washington’s most distinguished cultural institutions and concert venues, including the Library of Congress, National Gallery of Art, Smithsonian Institution, Corcoran Gallery of Art, and the Kennedy Center’s Terrace Theater. In 1990, together with clarinetist Claire Eichhorn and pianist Anna Balakerskaia, he founded The Ensemble da Camera of Washington. The ensemble has performed throughout the United States, appeared in radio broadcasts, commissioned and premiered new works, and made critically acclaimed recordings for the Vernissage Records label.

Born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Cyncynates began his violin studies with his father, Felix Cyncynates, and made his solo debut at the age of eleven after winning Brazil’s National Young Soloists Competition. By the age of nineteen, he had established an active solo career and was appointed First Concertmaster of the Brazilian Symphony Orchestra.

He continued his studies at the Conservatorio di Santa Cecilia in Rome, the Accademia Musicale Chigiana in Siena, and Indiana University, studying with Arrigo Pelliccia, Salvatore Accardo, and Franco Gulli. His early achievements were recognized with awards and honors from Brazil’s National Research Council, Schering Corporation, and Encyclopædia Britannica.

A highly regarded teacher, Cyncynates has guided students who have received prizes in national and international competitions, with former students holding positions in major orchestras throughout the United States, Europe, and Asia. He has presented master classes throughout the United States, Asia, and South America.

Cyncynates performs on “The David,” an 1873 violin by Jean-Baptiste Vuillaume, and is a Larsen Strings Performing Artist.
